Opening 2026: new PAYE rules and year-end forms

January meant closing out 2025 and running the first pay of 2026 at the same time. We added the 2026 PAYE rules and refreshed the GRA year-end forms.

Two years at once

January is when payroll software earns its keep. Payroll officers are finishing the old year's paperwork while running the first pay of the new one, and both have to be right. Most of the team's work this month went into making Mintage Payroll handle that overlap cleanly.

The headline change was the 2026 PAYE rules. We added the new thresholds and deduction logic to the calculation engine, added a way to apply the 2026 PAYE deduction to a pay period, and made PAYE configurable per company, so the switch to the new year could be managed rather than forced on everyone on the same day. On screen, payroll staff now see which threshold applies and get a clear warning before a GRA export if something needs attention.

Closing out 2025

On the year-end side we refreshed the GRA Form 2A and Form 7B outputs, then revisited them as testing turned up edge cases. Reports gained warnings where figures look unusual, payslip history was added, and the year rollover was reworked. A new command copies every employee into the next pay period, which removes a slow manual step at the start of the year.

Loss time can now be measured in days as well as amounts, with a new set of unit tests behind it. The loan manager got a substantial upgrade: loan schedules can be emailed to employees, receipts follow their own numbering sequence, and we tracked down a race condition that could trip up loan processing while a period was being finalised.

Payslips sent by WhatsApp now retry automatically when delivery fails, and payroll teams can invite all of their employees to the Mintage Connect app in one step. Behind the scenes we laid groundwork for secure machine-to-machine connections between Mintage products, which later months build on. In all, the month came to 567 commits across the backend and frontend.
