Getting PAYE ready for 2024

January in payroll is never quiet. A new tax year brings new PAYE rules, and every payslip from the first run of the year has to reflect them. Our main job this month was adding a 2024 PAYE calculation next to the 2023 one, for both monthly and fortnightly payrolls, and making it the active choice for new periods.

Mintage keeps each year's tax rules as a separate, versioned calculation. That means older periods keep calculating exactly as they did when they were run, while new periods pick up the new rules. We also wrote a one-off command that added the 2024 deduction to existing company payrolls, so nobody had to set it up by hand when the year turned.

GRA Form 7B and better exports

Year end also means GRA Form 7B, the annual statement of pay and tax deducted that each employee receives. The payroll module gained a PDF version of the form, built straight from the payroll data already in the system.

Exports got attention too. A payroll register was added to monthly, fortnightly and weekly exports, signature sheets can now be printed with one sheet per department, and reports gained a totals row and a column showing applied PAYE refunds. We also reworked how year-to-date statutory deductions are worked out, so YTD figures come from one consistent place.

Behind the scenes

This was a modest month, with most of the changes landing inside the internal modules where the payroll logic lives. The admin tools for custom pay fields also gained options to reset their settings and inputs, which makes it easier to correct a field's set-up without rebuilding it.
