Ready for year end

December is when payroll mistakes are most expensive, because the year has to close cleanly for PAYE and NIS. The most important fix this month was in the calculation engine: PAYE was not working out correctly in the final pay period of the year, and we corrected it before the last runs of 2023.

We also brought in a second version of the NIS offline form template and refined it over the following weeks, down to its default zoom level, and added PAYE and NIS offline Excel exports for weekly payrolls so weekly-paid employers have the same filing tools as everyone else. The NIS online file now gets a clear file name with the month in it.

Smaller changes

New allowance formulas cover payment in lieu, both for no-pay days and for days multiplied by a rate. Salary groups gained a display order, so pay items appear on payslips in the order an employer wants. Payslips also show more detail when salary is reduced by days, with negative amounts in red. A new command fixes bank account types, imports were given more time to finish on large files, and the standard formulas were reset per pay frequency so new setups start with the right defaults.

Not every change held. A set of fixes to how PAYE values appeared in some exports and the year-to-date journal went in mid-month and was reverted on 28 December. Year-end work is careful work, and pulling back a change is sometimes the right call. December closed the year with 97 commits.
