From timesheet to payroll

For hourly and shift-based workplaces, the slowest part of a pay run is turning a timesheet into payroll figures. In September we built a timesheet upload. It reads the hours from a spreadsheet, takes public holidays into account, applies each employee's overtime type from their profile, rounds values sensibly and updates the payroll. Because large files take time, the upload runs as a background job and the page checks back for the finished report.

Better payslips and reports

Payslips received a lot of attention. They can now show year-to-date figures, the employee's date of hire, any no-pay days and leave pay, and every bank account where pay is split. Negative values are highlighted, and the PAYE refund line now reads "PAYE Adjustment" so it is clearer to staff.

We also added a Payroll Journal export that summarises a pay run by department for the accounts team. Bank payment sheets can now be grouped by bank or by branch.

Rolling payroll on

Moving to the next period is now a proper step: payroll can be copied forward to the next period, or backward when needed, inside a database transaction, with values reset where a pay item is set to reset. In the calculation engine, small PAYE refunds are now held until December rather than paid in tiny amounts each month, the weekly PAYE threshold was corrected, and new formulas cover leave pay and deductions for lost time. September tied June for the busiest month, with 199 commits.
