Not every company pays the same way
Until June, the earnings lines in Mintage Payroll were mostly fixed. Real businesses have their own: shift allowances, production pay, meal money, site premiums. This month we added a set of custom gross salary lines that each company can switch on, name and configure in settings.
Each custom line has a formula. It can be a straight amount, or it can be worked out from days or hours, with options for time-and-a-half and double time. Only the lines a company has enabled are set up for its employees, so payroll screens stay uncluttered. Settings store the chosen formula with each line, so the payroll engine knows how to calculate it.
Carrying it through to the numbers
Adding a pay line is the easy part; making sure it flows correctly through tax, totals and reports is the work. We added an Other Salary Total figure to the payroll engine and to the pay period summary, and checked the order in which the calculations run.
Exports were updated for monthly, fortnightly and weekly payroll. They now include columns for custom gross salary lines, custom deductions and custom taxable deductions, with clear header labels, and payslips show the days or hours behind a calculated amount.
Finally, we made sure custom salary entries are cleared when a payroll is closed, so one period's overtime does not quietly carry into the next. The NIS manual export also gained a total row.
