Sharper payslips and a PAYE over-deduction fix

May tightened what April started: a fix so year-to-date adjustments no longer over-deduct PAYE, plus better payslip exports and new PAYE spreadsheets.

Fixing over-deduction

April's year-to-date PAYE engine did its job of catching underpayments, but in May we found a case where it could take too much. When adding up the PAYE an employee had already paid in earlier periods, the engine was looking at the base PAYE figure rather than the adjusted total that was actually deducted. That made it look as if less had been paid, so it collected more.

We fixed this by storing the adjusted PAYE total as its own figure for every period and using that in the year-to-date sum. The payroll summary and exports now show these better totals too. It was a small change in code, but an important one for the people being paid.

Payslips people can use

The rest of the month went into payslips and exports. Payroll officers can now pick exactly which payslips to export and get them back as a single bundled download, instead of one large file. The old single-file behaviour is still available as an option for anyone who prefers it. Payslips now list other allowances and show the employee's job title.

On the spreadsheet side, we added new PAYE export sheets, including one for weekly payroll, fixed some incorrect totals, and made sure columns with negative values still appear in Excel exports.

We also added error monitoring to the application, so when something goes wrong the team hears about it quickly rather than waiting for a report.
