Answering "why is my tax this amount?"
One of the most common payroll questions is simply why PAYE came out the way it did. In February we released a beta explainer that walks through the calculation. In May we made it something a payroll officer can confidently hand to an employee.
The explainer now covers overtime, numbers its steps consistently, and went through several layout passes before settling on a clean two-part design: the employee's figures on one side, the working on the other. Most importantly, it can now be downloaded as a PDF, generated by the backend from the same calculation the payroll uses, with quick links to any adjustments that affected the result.
Overtime and reporting
Overtime got more flexible. Payroll teams can now record overtime in days, and we added half-rate and single-rate overtime types alongside a tracker that can be switched on per company. Existing companies received the new options through a careful rollout rather than a forced change.
On the reporting side, the year-to-date payroll journal was reworked so net pay and employer contributions line up correctly, and the monthly payroll export gained a Loans sheet. We fixed a statutory deduction issue on the weekly GRA Form 2A and corrected year-to-date dates across all pay frequencies.
A feature we pulled back
Not everything stuck. We built a second-job allowance across the payroll stack, including its interaction with tax-free overtime, then reverted it before the month was out. It returns in a different form later in the year. Elsewhere, the Workforce sync learned to handle company switches and ignore cleared fields, and the offshore and onshore crew module gained overtime and payslip refinements. May came to 154 commits.
