A new tax year
Each year's PAYE and NIS rules live in their own versioned code in Mintage, so older periods keep calculating exactly as they did when they were run. In February we added the 2023 versions. PAYE now has 2023 calculations for daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly payrolls, with a matching year-to-date calculation, and NIS has 2023 deductions for the same frequencies, including the employer contribution.
Because employers already had employees set up on the earlier NIS rules, we wrote a command to move them across to 2023 in one step, with tests for weekly and fortnightly cases. While in that code we also fixed how the older NIS rules handled old-age pension and over-contribution.
Payslips by email
This month also saw the first version of e-payslips. Mintage can now email a payslip to each employee, with the company logo on it, and the sending happens in a background queue so a large payroll does not hold up the screen. Employees gained a personal email field to support it.
The export grind
Honestly, a lot of February's 200 commits read "fix export". Filing documents have to match what GRA and NIS expect down to date formats and column order, and getting there is iterative. We added a weekly PAYE CSV, an NIS schedule file, a year-to-date export and exports split by department, and fixed date and TIN formatting along the way. Smaller additions included bank charges, a history view of payroll changes, and imports that can skip rows rather than stop.
