A maintenance month
October brought no new features. It was a month for fixing small things properly.
The most important fix was to employee age. Payroll works out each employee's age for the period being paid. For weekly and fortnightly staff, the calculation looked up the pay period by its number alone, without checking the year. Once a second year of periods existed, week 10 of one year could be confused with week 10 of another. The lookup now matches both the period and the year, and monthly payroll uses the same period calendar for consistency. Because age is worked out when an employee joins a payroll, fixing the lookup at its source corrects it everywhere it is used.
Payslips and cleanup
We made a couple of fixes to the payslip template, including replacing a word that had been hard-coded where a setting should have been used, and corrected the path used when generating payslips. Variable names in the payslip code were tidied up at the same time.
We also removed a real-time messaging package that the application no longer needed and updated a related library. Fewer dependencies means less to keep patched.
Finally, the welcome page now shows the application's configured name, and the demo data uses an updated company name. Quiet months like this rarely make release notes, but they keep the product steady.
