A maintenance month
February was quiet. The larger of the two started our upgrade to Laravel 9, the framework Mintage Payroll is built on. Framework upgrades are not exciting to read about, but staying current keeps the product secure and makes later work easier. The upgrade was finished the following month.
Most of the month's real work happened inside the payroll modules, and it was about the small things that make a payroll officer's day easier.
Handling people who come and go
Staff join, leave and move between payrolls. We made it possible to see employees who had been removed from a payroll instead of having them simply disappear from view, and added a way to list inactive employees.
We also fixed a reporting gap. When someone was removed from or restored to a payroll, the year-to-date figures in reports did not always follow. Now the report updates the employee's year-to-date totals whenever they are added or removed, so the numbers match what was actually paid.
For the cases where a payroll was set up with the wrong tax rules, we added a command that changes which PAYE version is used on one specific pay period. And the PAYE exports gained some additional employee details after feedback from users.
None of this is headline material, but payroll software lives or dies on these details.
