New sign-in foundations and a head start on 2023

December's big project was moving sign-in to a dedicated identity service. We also set up the 2023 year, added pension plan deductions and started an import module.

A new foundation for sign-in

Most of December's 121 commits went into one project: moving account sign-in out of the application and onto a dedicated identity service. Handling passwords and sessions is specialist work, and using a service built for it lets the team spend more time on payroll.

The work covered the new sign-in flow, endpoints for login and user details, and a careful migration path so existing accounts carry over. A sync command links existing users to the new service, and the payroll modules were updated to use the new sign-in throughout. As with any change like this there were a few reverts and reworks along the way before it settled, and the error handling was made clearer so problems are easier to diagnose.

Getting ready for 2023

With the new year close, default data moved to 2023. We added pension plan deductions for both employees and employers, set up as an employee deduction and as an employer contribution, and the insurance export was updated to match.

We also fixed how fortnightly pay periods are generated on the calendar, so each fortnight starts and ends on the right day.

The start of imports

Right before the holidays we switched on a new import module. Its first version brings employee data in inside a single transaction, so an import either completes fully or not at all, and it creates departments that do not exist yet. At the same time, some unused API routes were removed from the import, reports and settings modules.
