Payslips and a loan manager

Payslips

If exports are what payroll staff judge a system by, payslips are what everyone else does. September's main piece of work was generating them. We added a payslip template, a payslip export, and a PDF library to produce the final documents.

Getting a payslip right is fiddly. It has to show the company's logo, the employee's details, every earning and deduction in a sensible order, and totals that match the payroll exactly. The commit messages tell that story honestly: a first version, then getting better, then fixes to exporting, file paths and the logo. To make distribution practical, payslips can be bundled into a single archive for download rather than handled one at a time.

A loan manager

We also added a new loan manager module. Staff loans and salary advances are common, and they need to be repaid through payroll in instalments. Handling them as their own module, rather than as a free-form deduction, means the balance is tracked properly over time. Related to that, closing a payroll now carries advance data and payment preferences into the next period.

Smaller improvements

A PAYE export in Excel format joined the CSV version from July, and a new options API made payroll settings easier to manage from the front end. We briefly added a real-time client module, then removed it when its name clashed with a reserved word in PHP, which is the kind of small surprise that makes for an afternoon of head-scratching.
